IM Security

"Real-time" communications, including public instant messaging (IM), enterprise IM, conferencing, voice over IP (VoIP) and mobile messaging are used throughout most enterprises, and often exist in a free-for-all with few constraints on usage. Although great for collaborating, left unmanaged it is impossible to measure and achieve regulatory compliance, protect against outside threats or to ensure efficient and appropriate use.

According to research firm Gartner, "by 2010, 90% of people with business e-mail accounts will also have IM accounts" despite the fact that, according to Nemertes Research, 70% of IT executives claim to have banned the use of commercial IM services. The reality for IT organizations is that—authorized or not—IM is being used on most networks and—authorized or not—it poses a serious security threat if left unchecked. Not surprisingly, Gartner recently labeled IM security one of "five technologies you need to know." Senior IT executives overwhelmingly concur as 62% told Nemertes Research that they worry about IM security.

The security concerns with the use of IM are myriad and range from technical vulnerabilities, such as client buffer overflow attacks, to inappropriate usage risks, such as the leakage of intellectual property.

CoreSight's original partners in this space were Akonix Systems, founded in early 2000 with a vision that Instant Messaging (IM) and other emerging real-time communications technologies were going to become a critical part of the corporate communications infrastructure.  Akonix were acquired by Quest Software during 2008, and we are pleased to be able to continue this relationship.
