A recent report featured at LightReading has suggested that voice over instant messaging (VOIM) will put the same pressures on voice over IP (VOIP) that VoIP has placed on traditional switched network telcos.
They note that "for a growing number of consumers and business users, IM has become a routine form of communication. As IM becomes a more dominant communications tool, users are demanding enhanced functionality, including avatars, file sharing, and whiteboarding. Most IM service providers already offer these types of services, but they are looking to do more – which is where voice enters the picture".
"Instant messaging (IM) is the killer application that is helping to make the PC the main medium for the widest range of communication possibilities. By adding voice services to their IM platforms, operators of IM networks are aiming to complete that transformation."
Analysis of the report continues "Although VOIM technology has been around for several years, it remains underused for a number of reasons – not the least of which is the fact that most PCs are not equipped to operate as full-fledged voice devices. Just as voice over IP (VOIP) evolved from a PC-to-PC service, it is almost certain that VOIM will mature along the same path, as end-user devices converge into multipurpose products."
The report - which retails for $900 USD - "examines the VOIM market from the viewpoint of IM service providers, including those that currently provide VOIM services, as well as those that are developing such services for the future. It looks at the issues VOIM service providers must address for the market to succeed, including targeting a customer base, developing a recurring revenue stream, and determining the best ways to drive customer usage. The report also examines features that make VOIM a viable application, possible barriers to usage, and factors that differentiate VOIM service providers."
